OEM Honda Starter Solenoids

Two coils of wire are wrapped around each a movable iron core that makes up your starter solenoid. These two wires connects to the ignition and starter switch. Another wire, the starter control wire, is connected to the starter motor itself.

When activated, the solenoid sends battery power to the starter motor while pushing the starter gear forward to mesh with the ring gear. A manual gear would connect to the flexplate and engine crankshaft, which is turned fast enough to allow the engine to start.

Some common starter problems are caused by the starter motor. Though these aren't necessarily caused by neglect, but it could still prove to be troublesome if some parts start to rub on each other, causing grinding and quicker wear and tear. It's best to keep testing the starter motor frequently to make sure it doesn't act up throughout your car's lifetime. Otherwise, the starter system isn't a maintenance or a replacement part.
